PROJECT - NEW YEARS IN CAPE TOWN

For South Africans, December is the month of the great migration. From the country’s interior to the pristine beaches, the people swarm … in the hundreds of thousands.

Nearly one year prior to actually shooting these scenes I began dreaming of photographing Cape Town’s beaches by helicopter in an attempt to truly capture the annual phenomenon. And so I waited. And waited. Until finally, the day was here! January 1, 2024. New Year’s Day. The peak of the migrating bathers.

I woke up early. Called the helicopter hanger. “Are we a go?” They said “check back at noon. The wind is too strong”. I waited some more. “We’re a go!”

The aerial images below were photographed with a medium format camera from an R44 helicopter.
